Sorry, fans, Nate's stuck on the bench

Those Knicks fans in the cheap seats who chanted "We want Nate" at various times yesterday afternoon at the Garden, might as well save their breath. After collecting his third straight DNP-coach's decision in the Knicks' 106-97 win over the Nets, Robinson may not see any extended action for a while, and there's little reason to argue otherwise.
The Knicks are on a roll these days -- at least for them anyway -- having won three of their last four games, and finally feeling like a team that can be competitive every time it takes the floor.
"We getting our confidence a little bit," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Hopefully, we just keep getting a little better."
Robinson was a bystander as the Knicks rallied from 61-53 deficit at halftime to take control with a dominating third quarter, when they outscored the Nets 33-18, with Larry Hughes contributing 16 of his 25 points.
The Knicks (6-15) limited the Nets (1-19) to 36.4 percent shooting in the quarter, while making 9 of 10 from the free-throw line compared to the Nets, who didn't attempt a single free throw. Yet, it was early in the third quarter when the first chants of "We want Nate" were heard, a chant that resurfaced again late in the fourth quarter though the Knicks had a comfortable lead.
Maybe it had something to do with the fact it was Kids Day at the Garden, and the youngsters in the building wanted to see someone on the court their own size. Nonetheless, their pleas fell on D'Antoni's deaf ears.
"It's not going to change anything," the coach said of the chants. "It is what it is."
Robinson's antics -- from shooting at the wrong basket in the Knicks' first meeting with the Nets to his self-absorbed play on the court -- have landed him in the coach's doghouse. But so have telling statistics that show the Knicks are 0-9 when Robinson plays 19 minutes or more and 6-6 when he plays fewer minutes or not at all.
It's also part of D'Antoni's method to keep his players on edge, never knowing exactly how many, if any, minutes they'll play in a game. Hughes has been there, starting the season on the bench, a forgotten piece until finally making his way back into the rotation.
Rookie Toney Douglas, who is supposed to be taking Robinson's minutes, played just 5:30 yesterday. Sometimes Danilo Gallinari starts. Sometimes it's Al Harrington. With D'Antoni nothing is a given.
"Every game is different," said Hughes, who has played in 19 games, started 14, but came off the bench yesterday and played 39 minutes. "It just a matter of trying to find that focus as a professional and go out and do the job the best you can."
Ideally, players want to know what their roles are: whether they're starting, whether they're coming off the bench, how many minutes they can expect.
D'Antoni isn't about that, not in a season in which the Knicks are constantly searching for a winning formula. D'Antoni thinks he might be on to something and right now it doesn't include Robinson.
"There's no reason to change things up if things are going well," D'Antoni said.
Robinson hasn't complained, saying yesterday, "We won. That's the most important thing."
His $4 million salary should make things easier. So should the notion he won't be the last player wondering about his minutes. That seems to be part of the process with D'Antoni, and right now there's little reason to argue otherwise.
