INCREASE THE OFFENSIVE PACE

Celtics officially sign Darko Milicic, Micah Downs, and Rob Kurz
By CelticsBlog Staff on Sep 28, 9:27a

The Celtics have officially announced via press release three signings that we have known about for several days now.

First Darko who is reportedly on a vet minimum contract.

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent forward/center Darko Milicic. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Milicic, a 7'0 center/forward, appeared in 29 games last season for the Minnesota Timberwolves and averaged 4.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 16.3 minutes per game. Milicic tied his career-high with seven blocks against the Dallas Mavericks on January 25. Beginning his 10th season, Milicic recorded a career-high of 8.8 points per game during the 2010-11 season with the Timberwolves and finished 5th in the NBA in blocked shots per game (2.03). The second overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft was a member of the 2004 NBA Championship Detroit Pistons during his rookie season. He has posted career averages of 6.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.31 blocks in 467 career games.

Next are the two guys that got camp-invite (non-guaranteed) contracts

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent forwards Micah Downs and Rob Kurz. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Downs, a 6'8 forward, played last season for Assignia of the Spanish ACB league averaging 11.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 55% from the floor on two-point shots and 35.3% from three-point territory.

Kurz, a 6'9 forward, played last season for CB Murcia in Spain and SLUC Nancy in France. Kurz has previously played in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors during the 2008-09 season where he appeared in 40 games as a rookie. He recorded a career-high of 21 points against Utah on April 11, 2009 when he shot 8-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-7 from three-point territory.

Chances are Downs and Kurz will end up being cut, but there's a good chance they could end up on the Maine Red Claws this year.

MEDIA DAY QUOTES AND NOTES !
28 sept. 2012

According to Danny Ainge, the Celtics do not have the bi-annual exception this year, eliminates any thought of them bringing in a impact vet mid-year unless it's by trade.

There's a lot of Glen Davis in Jared Sullinger in their game, personality, and sense of humor. Check out his interview with Molly McGrath and Marc D'Amico at celtics.com

Doc Rivers plans to run the offense through Garnett, run pick and pops with Brandon Bass, and get more out of their transition game.

Doc Rivers is considering putting PP on the 5-5-5 minute plan he utilized last year with KG.

By all eyewitness accounts, Pierce looks to be in great shape. The knee that plagued him in May and June is at 100%.

Chris Wilcox put himself at "90%," still getting his wind back.

Avery Bradley doesn't have a timetable for his return and hasn't even touched a basketball. He joked that he would have wanted to shoot it and maybe hurt himself. After tearing his left shoulder completely and a lot of his right, doctors told him he'd be out until January but right now, he weeks ahead of schedule. Even three months from seeing the floor, AB says, "my confidence level is so high right now." Love this kid.

The rookies seem to genuinely have a lot of respect for the veterans. Whether it was the workouts in LA or getting through the stations at media day, the young guys really recognize the opportunity in front of them to work with guys like Pierce and Garnett.

Great quote from Darko Milicic: "For me, I stopped chasing the dream as being the second pick a long time ago." It's a good sign of maturity that Milicic knows what's expected out of him in Boston.

Both Avery Bradley and Dionte Christmas cited Jason Terry as the vet their most excited to play with. Dionte has been mentored by Terry over the summer and Terry once played in a pick up game with AB when he was in the 8th grade.

Great JT quotes: when asked about Ray Allen, Jason Terry replied, "who?" When asked about the Celtics only mustering up 2 points from the bench in Game 7 of the ECF, Terry said, "that won't happen with me here."

Jared Sullinger said that falling to the Celtics felt like being picked in the lottery.

Fab Melo when asked what it's like playing KG: "He's huge and he can shoot. It's hard to block his shot." Welcome to the Thunderdome, Fab.

Garnett's reasons for coming back: "Doc Rivers # 1, the fans # 2, the chanting from the fans (at the end of Game 6), and friends and family who wanted me to continue."

KG regarding Ray Allen: "I don't have Ray's number anymore. I'm not trying to communicate. I'm just being honest."

Both Doc and Danny reiterated what they've been saying all summer: Rajon Rondo is the leader of the team now. Jason Terry called him, "the best in the business."

Kevin Garnett is Rondo's closest friend on the team.

He wasn't prickly, short-answer Rondo today. Between his tour his Nike tour in France (BAZ WAS THERE ), travelling with Red Bull to Southeast Asia, and his internship with GQ during NY Fashion Week, you get a sense that Rondo is really opening up to the spotlight of being a star in the NBA.

Doc plans to use Jeff Green as a big 3 and a fast 4. Small Ball baby !

Green says he's at 100%, but doesn't want to be content and settle. When he first started playing in pick up games, he encouraged people to go at him and not take it easy.

Excellente interview de Keyon Dooling par Jessica Camerato (CSNNE.com) où l'ex-mentor et good'pal de Rondo expose son passé d'enfant abusé, son passage chez les Celtics, son amitié avec Rondo et KG ("I hated him before I go there" ^^), ses projets pour le futur et la NBA bien sûr où il jouait encore il y a peu un grand rôle au syndicat des joueurs.

Keyon Dooling: strength, courage, & integrity
By wjsy on Sep 27, 6:40p

In a candid interview with CSNNE.com's Jessica Camerato, Keyon Dooling opens up about his history of abuse, his responsibilities as a role model and provider, and insight to his brotherhood with Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett.

I'll take Jay King's lead at CelticsTown and just link everybody to Jessica Camerato's heart-to-heart sit down with Keyon Dooling. He opens up about his history of abuse, his responsibilities as a role model and provider, and his brotherhood with Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett.

When he joined the Celtics a year ago, the only things I knew about him was that he was a great two-way guard that could come off the bench and provide a spark, that he was vice president of the NBPA and vital in brokering the lockout, and that Doc Rivers loved him. Now I know why. Read Camerato's interview and you'll understand why Dooling was so beloved in the locker room and around the league.

Now, something completely different.

Five stars. The Barking One.

Tu te cales sur le Ubuntu, tu respectes les règles des Boston Celtics (c'est affiché en grosses lettres à Waltham au centre d'entraînement : what hurts more ? the pain of hard work or the pain of regret ?).

TEAM WORK. WE NOT ME.

KG is a gift, dude.

Darko Milicic agrees to one-year deal with Celtics

Free-agent center and former No. 2 pick Darko Milicic has agreed to sign with the Celtics, sources close to the situation confirmed.

The deal is guaranteed for one year at the league's minimum salary, according to one of the sources. Milicic, 27, had been looking for his next job since July 12, when the Minnesota Timberwolves waived him with the amnesty clause in order to erase the final two years of his controversial four-year, $16 million deal off their books for salary-cap purposes.

Because Milicic will still be paid by the Timberwolves, he was less focused on the financial aspect of his next contract than he was finding the right fit. As such, he'll join a Celtics team that still has a tremendous core and has only veteran Jason Collins and rookie Fab Melo as true centers after the departures of Greg Stiemsma (Timberwolves) and Ryan Hollins (Clippers) via free agency.

Milicic -- the 7-foot, 275-pound Serbian who was taken behind LeBron James and directly in front of Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in the 2003 draft -- saw a drastic decline in his role with the Timberwolves last season. He averaged 4.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 16.3 minutes for first-year coach Rick Adelman, down from 8.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in 24.4 minutes in 2010-11, the first year of his new deal.

=================================================================

Kevin Garnett Day: heart and soul
By Jeff Clark on Sep 27, 3:45a

Rajon Rondo is the best player on this team now (in my humble opinion). He's the leader, the new face of the franchise, and the foundation upon which the future of the team will (in theory) be built upon. With all that said, Kevin Garnett is still the heart and soul of this team.

Everything changed in Boston on that Summer day in 2007 when Kevin Garnett was traded. The Celtics didn't just go from being bad to being good overnight. They went from being NBA players to becoming a team.

Kevin Garnett had all the tools he needed to be a top scorer in the league but he never wanted that. He's been the MVP and he's had personal accolades but I don't think much of that mattered to him. He's all about the team and all about winning. All players say that and all coaches preach that, but there are few NBA superstars who really truly believe it right down to their bones like Kevin Garnett does.

Ubuntu was a clever motivational tactic but it would have been just coachspeak if it wasn't for Kevin Garnett. Paul Pierce did his part by embracing the new stars. Ray Allen sacrificed a lot of his game - at least initially - for the good of the team. But Garnett has been living out ubuntu his whole career. He just finally had the supporting cast he needed where he could make the right basketball decision (like passing out of a double team) and still give his team the best chance to win. In Minnesota, KG taking a shot while double teamed was actually a better option than letting someone else take an open shot - yet he would still pass it out because it was the right play.

Nothing exemplifies this team concept more than his dedication to team defense. Again, he could lead the league in blocked shots or steals if he really wanted to. But he'd rather play sound defense - which is unglamorous and requires working in concert with 4 other guys. A defense is only as good as its weakest link (and boy have we had some weak links on the court at times) but somehow Garnett has been able to keep everyone on the same page. Don't get me wrong, Doc Rivers and his staff deserve oodles of praise as well, but KG is the general on defense. When he yells jump, the foot soldiers don't even have to yell "how high?" because they already know exactly which spot to run to.

A truly elite defensive unit requires communication and trust in each of the other members of the team. It is a bond that develops between them so that they become one interwoven entity. None of that is possible without buy-in from the top down and when one of your best players is your best defender and perhaps the hardest worker, that sets the tone for everyone else.

Rondo has picked up a lot of that from Garnett and I do believe that he'll carry that with him for the rest of his career. But the bottom line is that if Kevin moved on this past summer, it was going to be demolition time to the team. Instead, he stayed and the team carries on.
We not me.

Rondo continues to quarterback the Celtics
By wjsy on Sep 26, 2:42p

In an interview with Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears, Rajon Rondo talks about the practices he put together in LA, the rumored feud between him and Ray Allen, the importance of building team chemistry, and how he's a better quarterback than Kevin Garnett.

Marc J. Spears at Yahoo! Sports has more details on Rajon Rondo's informal workouts that he personally put together on the eve of training camp. It's a sign of his growing maturity as the leader of this team. This is coming off the heels of Danny Ainge calling Rondo the best player on the team and earlier this summer, Doc reiterated that this was now his team.

Check out the article. There are a lot of interesting tidbits but the one thing that really stuck out for me was the importance that Rondo put on team chemistry:

"I wanted J.T. to play with Kevin. I wanted Courtney to see how Paul likes to play. I wanted Paul and Jeff Green to go at each other," Rondo told Yahoo! Sports. "I wanted to play with those guys. It was getting guys away from our actual training facility to get a new view.

"I wanted the guys to have fun. When you're with me I want you to say, 'Man, I had a good time with Rondo.' And I think that's what they did."

"The game is about tempo," Rondo said. "We don't want to make it more complicated. It's just basketball. I am just trying to get the timing with J.T. and Courtney. That is why I wanted to get to work early, so I can know where I want them to be when I drive baseline or drive to the middle and where they like the ball."

By the time training camp rolls around, he'll have a good sense of how all the parts work together and he and Doc can start game planning right off the bat. Surely, the rumored feud between him and Ray Allen will be front and center on October 30th when the Celtics open up the season in Miami and it's good to see Rondo trying to make a bigger effort in creating camaraderie with his teammates off the court, too.

One curious addition to the team's bonding session was Atlanta Hawk and best friend of RR, Josh Smith. We've talked extensively on CelticsBlog over the last two days about what a Josh Smith trade would look like if Danny Ferry decided to part ways with the talented young forward. His attendance at the team's flag football game (where "K.G. was the quarterback of the other team, but they had to sub him out because he wasn't getting any touchdowns") is a little curious. If there's anything to be critical at all with Rondo, it's that I don't want Josh Smith to know what Brandon Bass does in the slot against a Tampa 2.
