BOB GROSS (1976-1982)

Position : Forward-Guard ▪ Height : 6-6 ▪ Weight : 200 lbs.
Born : August 3, 1953 in San Pedro, California
High School : Fermin Lausen in San Pedro, California
College : California State University, Long Beach
Draft : Portland Trail Blazers, 2nd round (7th pick, 25th overall), 1975 NBA Draft
NBA Debut : October 28, 1975

Bobby Gross became entrenched in Trail Blazers lore for his play during the 1977 playoff run to the NBA title. "He was the grease, the guy who made it all work," Bill Walton said. "Maurice (Lucas) was the key, and our other players were good, but Bobby ... without him we wouldn't have won it."
A small forward who was in constant motion, Gross saved his best for the NBA Finals, leading the Blazers in scoring for the final two victories in Game 5 and Game 6. In Game 5, he scored 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go along with five assists and three steals. In the clinching Game 6, Gross had 24 points, making 12-of-16 shots.
It capped an impressive playoff run for Gross, who went against noted backcourt players Scott May of Chicago, David Thompson of Denver, Cazzie Russell of the Lakers and Julius Erving of the 76ers. Gross held all the players, except Erving, below their season averages while increasing his scoring from 11.4 in the regular season to 14.1 in the playoffs. He also averaged 5.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists in the postseason.

"Look at the record books, they don't lie," Walton said. "He went head-to-head with some greats and outplayed them all."

Gross was known for his activity on the court, be it on the fast-break, back-door cuts or using screens to run his defender ragged around the court. Walton said one reason Gross ran so much was because coach Jack Ramsay never stopped yelling at him.

"Ramsay was a big board guy – he loved writing things on the board before each game," Walton said. "The board would change every game, except for one thing : Across the top it said RUN, RUN, RUN and he would come in and say 'I want relentless, tenacious running until the other team quits!' Then he would turn around, look at Bobby and say, 'That means YOU!' "

Gross' running was essential to creating proper space to make Ramsay's motion offense work.

"Other players like Pete Marovich, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird created space with the ball," Walton said. "But Bobby Gross created space without the ball, by running. To do it without the ball is absolutely incredible."

Troubled by aching knees, Gross left the Blazers in 1982 and played 27 games with San Diego before retiring at age 30. He lives in Portland and works for Lorentz Bruun Construction Co. in its restoration division. He did not return phone messages for this story. (Jason Quick, oregonlive.com)
